Training & Institutional Change

Human capital is any country’s most important resource. Achieving economic and sustainable growth requires investment in human resources so that people can achieve their highest potential within their environment. Such investment is crucial across the globe at all levels from basic education to advanced technical training. To ensure success, careful attention must be given to identifying skills gaps, designing appropriate support and ensuring its successful delivery.

ULG has been supporting economic development through training and education for over 10 years. Our experience embraces both the formal and informal education sectors; from strengthening of tertiary and technical education institutions, to provision of specialist short term training and placing individuals on degree courses and practical training placements.

Training and Institutional Change

We offer experience in sector driven programmes, as well as a portfolio of training projects completed in over 20 countries in numerous different specialist fields.

Our consultants work through the most appropriate approach or mix of approaches which include on-the-job training, seminars, workshops and more structured classroom training to meet the specific needs of each client.

Institutional Support and Education Management

ULG recognises that one of the most expedient ways to sustain education and training in the long term is through the rehabilitation, strengthening and expansion of existing systems. Typically, this can involve a number of different activities such as identifying education shortfalls, assessment of training needs, analysis of current training operations, developing policies and plans, and the implementation of education and training reforms. Often such reforms require considerable institutional change as well as modifications to the technical aspects of education delivery and curriculum. We have assisted a number of institutes, from the formal education sector and within Ministries and Government Departments, to embrace these various stages of education development.

Education Materials Procurement

ULG is aware that, as an essential part of any education sector reform project, sourcing and purchasing of educational equipment within the stringent regulations of donor organisations is a specialist activity in itself. We have worked with all the major donors and have equipped education and training centres in a variety of countries and situations. Our expertise extends from providing technical advice to conducting large international tenders or purchasing on a local basis. We source, procure, ship and organise installation of equipment including:

  • Multi-media equipment
  • Laboratory and specialist equipment
  • Journals and books
  • Computers and networks
  • Reprographic and office equipment
  • Classroom/lecture theatre equipment
  • Specialist field vehicles

Management and Entrepreneurship

Countries emerging from command driven economies often discover that economic growth is hampered by the lack of commercial management and entrepreneurship skills within the national population. Small and medium enterprises play a crucial role in any economic development, and assisting people to embrace their role in a commercial environment is an issue that ULG Northumbrian has been involved in for several years. We have trained many individuals from the SME sector in modern management concepts, as well as equipped trainers from a wide variety of emerging business schools with the necessary curriculum and skills to deliver such training themselves.

Technical and Vocational Training

In many countries, economic development can be impeded by the lack of technically skilled workforces, and education reform focuses on the vocational and technical training sector. From the Former Soviet Union to Southern Africa, ULG has provided advisors to established colleges and governments to assist with addressing such skills shortages. Specialist teachers have assisted in the upgrading of curriculum, and modernisation of delivery methods, in a wide variety of subjects, from business administration to electronics. We have also provided advisors to assist with college management strategies as well as training of teachers.

Short Term Training

Informal training is a vital process in many organisations that wish to effect change or upgrade the skills of groups of people. We have substantial experience in offering such training either to trainers or direct to individuals, in specialist circumstances or as part of a formal training project. Our delivery methods are tailored to specific needs and include short courses, on-the-job training, participatory workshops, mentoring or a combination of methods as required. Our specialists, equipped with multi-media materials and equipment, and experienced in working in different cultures and across language barriers have provided training in:

  • Economics
  • Strategic Planning
  • Use of Computers
  • Management Information Systems
  • Forestry
  • Farm Management
  • Resource Planning
  • Environmental Impact Assessment
  • Environmental Audits
  • Wildlife Management
  • Water Supply and Sanitation

Fellowship Management and International Student Placement

In some instances, organisations require specialist training and education that is not available in their own countries. ULG offers extensive experience in student placement services across a variety of sectors. Our service includes postgraduate degree placements, identifying short term technical training courses, travel arrangements and student orientation, budgeting and management of fellowship funds.

International Study Tours and Work Placements

Many projects require study tours and work placements that give groups and individuals the opportunity to learn how other countries deal with issues relevant to their particular specialist fields. We have designed, organised and implemented numerous such events across a wide number of sectors, and for people from over 20 different countries. Our service includes identification of appropriate placement organisations, management of travel and accommodation, liaison with host institutions, pre-departure briefing, accompanied tours, organisation of social and cultural events, budgeting and financial management of tours, and interpretation services.
